A flat walk along the river to Dumbarton./h3>

Easy

An easy, pretty scenic walk through a wide valley along a river. The final part of the walk are is through some floodplains. This walk is not suitable after long spells of rain despite of the good tarmac all the way. There are good shops in the first half of this walk. Bottles of soft drinks is still recommended as the final half is exposed to sunshine. Good shoes are recommended. This is another good winter walk.



Train to Balloch from Glasgow/Partick 2 times an hour.
Bus from Glasgow to Balloch 2-4 times an hour (not recommended due to the lengthy journey).

H3>The walk starts from the Balloch train stop, the terminus on this line. Walk 50 yards/meters to the Sweeney Cruises information kiosk at the bridge. Then walk under the bridge to the right and then follow the path down the river.
The path is pretty good tarmac path and it takes you down the river past to the bridge at Alexandria a couple of miles/ 3 km downstream where it crosses under the bridge. Alexandria is an interesting place, still undergoing some much needed renovations.

The path follows the river down through some long river bends, including a 270 degrees river bend, past Renton before it enters the plains past Dumbarton Golf Course on the other side of the river and then the final mile/ 2 km before it crosses under the railway bridge and the main road bridge before it ends up on Bridge Street, the bridge over the river and the good views towards Dumbarton Rock. Walk through the first half of the High Street and then follow the signposts to the Dumbarton Railway Station, where this walk ends.

Train from Dumbarton Railway Station 4 times an hour to Partick/Glasgow.
